Following directions with song and dance!

It's always great to practice following directions, even if it's through a fun song and dance! Here's what we practiced today.

Here is part of it on video. The password is Demsky.

Fire safety

Here are some pictures from our fire safety assembly.

Some children practiced stop, drop and roll!

I was in a contest with Mrs. Wintersteller to put in the fire gear!

I won! Mr. Sheldon even got a chance to race!

Sense of smell

We did an experiment where each table had three cups that appeared to be water. We used our sense of smell to discover the truth!

Cup A had a few drops of imitation clear vanilla. Cup B was water. Cup C had vinegar.

The pictures of the first whiffs of vinegar are priceless!

Johnny Appleseed Day

On Friday we taste tested different apples with cider and apple juice.

We then made a chart with tally marks!

Our class perfered cider. If you want to review tally marks with your student, the easiest way to remember when to cross is to use your hand.

Always cross on 5's, just like your thumb!

We also created a graph for our favorite apple. We had to choose between red, green and yellow.

We began to have a conversation about "how many more people like red apples to green?". I explained that if you draw an imaginary line (see the black dotted line above) that you can count from there. Your student will see similar questions to this on future assessments so it's a great way to practice!

Chants for Letters and Sounds (1/2 of the alphabet)

Below  is a vimeo video link of a few students showing you how we chant our letters and sounds. These chants coincide with the cards on the wall in the front of our classroom. Even if your student already knows letters and sounds, this often help when sounding out unknown words and in the writing process. Feel free to practice this at home! I will upload the complete alphabet once we cover that material in class.

If you would like a copy of these sound cards, I can email them to you to practice at home!

Ever get frustrated helping your student work on writing at home? Fear not! If you follow our classroom process it should help. Your student can help explain each step!
